A dog is a secondary carnivore and this is evident in their short digestive tract which is 10-13 feet long (shorter in cats) with an acidity level of less than one compared to a human’s digestive tract which is 25-28 feet long with an acidity level between 1.5-2.5.
In addition to the short digestive tract, their jaw structure and their teeth are designed to rip & tear meat, to chew bone and their digestive tract is very short which allows the meats and bone to pass through quickly and avoid bacteria from building up. A dog does not have the flat molars like you and me and therefore if you look at their jaw structure you can see for yourself why kibble is a wrong choice. A dog’s DNA differs from that of a gray wolf at most by .2%. To put this into perspective a coyote varies from a wolf by 4%. No matter how you look at it, a dog’s system is designed just like a wolf. If you look at the structure of their jaw you will see that no teeth are flat they all have points designed for the tearing of meat and chewing of bones. Think about that for a moment, when was the last time you saw a wolf sitting around a campfire cooking his dinner or pulling the string on a bag of dog food in the middle of the woods? A dog just like a wolf is designed to eat raw meat in its natural form. Many would argue that a dog has evolved over time and its body is adapted to eating kibble. The problem with that statement is that their digestive tract is still exactly the same as it always has been. They have not adapted to kibble, in fact their life span is beginning to shrink and they are having health issues that veterinarians did not experience 20 years ago, additionally vets are seeing alarming rates of cancers now more than ever before.
The basic principal behind raw feeding is the life force. All living things on this planet contain life force energy including plants, animals, humans, berry bushes, grasses, and trees. When an animal such as a chicken or cow consumes grasses which contain energy and feed their life force this same energy is then passed on to your pet when they consume the meat of that animal. When your animal’s life force is fed, miraculous things begin to take place in their body. Compare this principle to kibble. Kibble is cooked at extremely high temperatures which destroys all life force energy and any digestive enzymes that naturally occur in raw meat. The animals used for kibble are also diseased, dying, disabled or dead animals. This means your pet is ingesting unknown chemicals, pharmaceutical drugs, and many other unthinkable toxins. Additional chemicals are then added for preserving the food along with many chemicals that are not mentioned on the bag. These toxins then build up over time in your pet’s body and cause diseases to form. When you learn the truth about kibble you begin to understand why your animal survives on it but never truly reaches it’s real potential for health. When an animal’s life force is fed properly, they will no longer survive but they will thrive and begin to show a new zest for life simply by fueling their body with the food that their body is designed to eat.
When a dog eats raw foods, its body processes it and passes it in 4-8 hours, kibble and its many chemical components are so difficult for a dog to break down that it stays in their digestive tract for 14-16 hours! The short amount of time it takes for meat to digest allows for their body to digest the meat quickly and easily. You will find that your pet has fewer digestive issues when fed raw and they will have less gas. Raw meats also allow for proper function of other vital organs. The kidneys begin to function better because the dog receives its water through their food. Kibble causes the kidneys to over work and eventually dry out because they are not given the adequate amount of water that they need to work. You will notice a significant decrease in water consumption by your pet. This does not mean that they don’t need water, it simply means that their intake will decrease. Be sure to always have fresh water available for them at all times and especially during activities. When you feed raw foods the load on the liver, begins to decrease. It no longer is forced to constantly break down foreign chemicals and therefore is able to function at a better capacity.
So now that you know about why you should raw feed, how do you go about it? There are many ways to accomplish this. We encourage everyone to do some research before making this decision. Each person must decide what their comfort level is. Some people are comfortable feeding whole bones along with meat, organs and veggies just as they would eat in the wild. While this is a perfectly fine way to feed please know that dogs can choke on whole bones if they do not chew them and then if they are chewed and if they stay in the stomach long enough the acids will break them down. However, if they do not stay in the stomach long enough they can cause intestinal obstruction and tears. With that in mind, you may not be comfortable with the whole bones which then you can feed either a ground product that contains the bones, meat, organ & veggies or you can feed meat with a dehydrated mix which contains the calcium & other nutrients. You may also choose to not feed veggies. Some believe they do not need them. I am a firm believer that there is not one single way to accomplish raw feeding. I feel that if a dog is receiving raw foods, bones and organs no matter what the form it will be a thousand times better off than if it was fed kibble. I encourage you to do your own research and decide which way is best for you and your dog. It does not need to be as complicated as some would make it sound.
It is extremely important that you follow a few guidelines when raw feeding. First, an animal requires calcium in their diet. If they do not receive the proper amount of calcium their bones will become like rubber and they can become paralyzed. If you are feeding meat alone you must include bone. They also require the organs for proper vitamins and nutrients. If you choose to not feed organs, you will need to supplement with a multi-vitamin. They also require variety. An animal receives different nutrients from each type of meat. It is important to not give them one particular meat for longer than a couple of weeks.
